  16. <p>Perot and the Pentagon draw a hard line against gays
  17. </p>
  18. <p>    Uncle Ross wants you -- unless, perhaps, you're gay. On ABC's
  19. 20/20, Barbara Walters discussed with Ross Perot whether he
  20. would have an "admitted homosexual" serve in his Cabinet in a
  21. post such as Secretary of Defense, Treasury or Education. "No,"
  22. Perot declared, "I don't want anybody there that will be a point
  23. of controversy with the American people. It will distract from
  24. the work to be done." He added that it's not "realistic" for
  25. homo sexuals to serve in the military.

  27. <p>    Perot, of course, is only supporting national policy. The
  28. Washington National Guard, upholding Pentagon regulations, just
  29. informed Colonel Mar garethe Cammermeyer that she will be
  30. discharged June 11 because she has disclosed that she is a
  31. lesbian. Cammermeyer is chief of nursing for Washington State's
  32. Army National Guard and a Vietnam veteran. The much decorated
  33. nurse -- she received a Bronze Star for meritorious service
  34. during Vietnam's Tet offensive -- is one of the highest-ranking
  35. soldiers ever to be thrown out of uniform for being homosexual
  36. -- despite the reluctance of National Guard officials, who wish
  37. to keep her.
